Avril revolutionizes the wood industry with Evertree

The climate emergency, pollution and its impacts on human health encourage economic actors to find alternatives to petroleum-based products. At the same time, consumers are placing increasing importance on the sustainability of products, while still demanding their performance. To meet these two challenges, Avril is working on biosourced and low-carbon solutions that are more environmentally friendly.
With the start-up Evertree, Avril has become part of the development of efficient and sustainable plant chemistry, providing an alternative to the fossil ingredients used in wood panel resins.

An innovation from plant chemistry
Evertree is a pioneer in proteochemistry, the protein chemistry process used to make plant-based resin from rapeseed or sunflower meal, a co-product of crush oil. Evertree’s products – vegetable adhesive solutions used in wood panels – are one of the most successful outlets for this process.

A biosourced, low-carbon and healthy adhesive solution
In 2010, in a garage near Philadelphia, two American researchers sought to replace petroleum-sourced resins.
They had the intuition to test the properties of oilseed cake to design a vegetable adhesive. Five years later, the first bio-based adhesive prototype was developed. At that time, fossil resin used in wood panels was therefore reduced by 20%. In 2016, Avril fulfilled its goals by partnering with Bpifrance to create Evertree.

Evertree took five years to create “Green-Ultimate”, a bio-based, low-carbon and healthy adhesive solution. A world first.
It reduces the carbon footprint of composite panel production by 60%. Most importantly, it is the world’s first formaldehyde-free plant-based adhesive, a product recognised as a carcinogen by the WHO since 2004.
With the Green Ultimate plant solution, composite wood becomes as healthy as a natural product.

The long-term ambition: to revolutionise the forest-based sector
This objective is part of a larger project to manufacture houses, furniture, parquet floors and toys from materials that are less harmful to man. Founded in 2020, this project aims to bring together the various players in the furniture and interior design industry around these sustainable solutions.
